Following the Burlington Northern merger of 1970, seeing Great Northern locomotives leading a train in suburban Chicago, on BN’s three track “Raceway”, became common.  However, this photo was taken at Hinsdale, IL on April 28, 1963, seven years BEFORE the BN merger!  At the time, it was common for GN power to run through to/from Chicago on the CB&Q/GN Chicago-Seattle “hot” freight #97, in order to save time (no locomotive change in St. Paul).  In another interesting bit of trivia, the lead unit in this consist (GN 436D) was apparently sold for scrap by the CB&Q in error in 1968!  Photo by Marty Bernard.
